Anna Maria Samuel Project: Historical Presentation and Community Panel

Hanes Auditorium, Elberson Fine Arts Center

The Anna Maria Samuel Project will host a historical presentation and community panel that examines the history of enslaved and free Africans and African Americans in the town of Salem and at Salem Academy and College. Speakers and panelists include Martha Hartley, Director of Moravian Research and Co-Chair of the Hidden Town Project at Old Salem Museums & Gardens, as well as members of the Anna Maria Samuel Project.

Anna Maria Samuel Project: Signage and Sisters Museum Unveiling, Walking Tour, and Commemoration of Enslaved Laborers

September 17, 2021 – 4 p.m.
Church Street, in front of Main Hall

The Anna Maria Samuel Project will unveil new historical markers that tell the story of African Americans who were enslaved by the Salem Academy and College before Emancipation and those who continued to work at the school into the 20th century. At the same time, the Single Sisters Museum will be open for the community to view its newly updated panels and exhibits. The Anna Maria Samuel Project will then facilitate a short walking tour of the campus, focusing on the sites that have significance to the school’s history with slavery and race. This event will culminate at St. Philips Moravian Church, at the end of Church Street, with a commemoration of those who were enslaved by Salem Academy and College.

An Evening for Salem

Honor the Past. Ignite the Future.

The Winston-Salem Symphony will perform a one-hour program in Hanes Auditorium at 6 p.m. The program will feature “Gaudeamus,” a composition by Margaret Sandresky A’38 C’42, commissioned for the occasion. Margaret Sandresky, a beloved alumna and retired professor of music, will celebrate her 100th birthday in 2021. The concert will be live-streamed and will include a pre-recorded video “interview” with Mrs. Sandresky by Winston-Salem Symphony Music Director Tim Redmond, along with highlights of her life.

Following the concert, guests will move to the dinner and dance in Corrin Refectory. Cocktails will be accompanied by light music, and during the dinner, there will be fun presentations highlighting the past and future of Salem Academy and College. The presentations will be very upbeat and entertaining. After dinner, we will hit the dance floor with a live band.

Alumnae who cannot attend in person are encouraged to host their own “Celebrations of Salem” on the same night wherever they are. If possible, we will connect them with the guests in the Refectory via live stream for toasts to Salem!

Journey from Bethlehem to Salem

Journey from Bethlehem to Salem

September 28–October 26, 2021

Join us or follow us as we recreate the journey undertaken by the Single Sisters from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to North Carolina. The Journey will cover 500 miles over 29 days and will follow the historic route as outlined in the 1766 journal of Salome Meurer—along the colonial migration trail, which passes through Maryland, continues east of the mountains in Virginia, and turns west in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Walkers will arrive in Bethabara, North Carolina, the Sisters’ original destination, on October 25. The final leg of the Journey will be 6.5 miles from Bethabara to a celebratory Homecoming on Salem Square on the afternoon of October 26, which will be open to all. Alumnae and friends are invited to participate in any part of the “Journey to Salem” in person or virtually. Watch your email for opportunities to sign up, train, or participate in your own location.

Welcome to Journey to Salem registration!

How to Register

To register, you will select each day, or "leg", that you will walk. For example, if you plan to walk the entire route, you will check 29 boxes, each box representing one leg. Or you can walk just leg 1, or legs 5, 6, and 29. Any combination is fine!

On average, we will walk 20 miles per day, but there are a few days where the distance is between 6 and 15 miles. Please note that daily mileage listed on the registration form is approximate and subject to change slightly.

Virtual Participation

Join us virtually if you can't walk with us in-person! Virtual participation can include any form of measurable aerobic exercise such as walking, swimming, running, biking etc. Virtual participants are encouraged to complete as many miles as they can between September 28 and October 26.

Registration Fee

Non-refundable registration fee is $35 for in-person and $25 for virtual. Fee is waived for current Salem Academy & College students, faculty and staff. If you plan to walk in person for one or more days and also virtually during the month, please pay the in-person registration fee of $35.

Lodging

The Journey Team has blocked hotel rooms along the route. You are responsible for reserving and paying for your room. Space is limited so please reserve your room(s) early!

Dr. Prathibha Varkey, President of Mayo Clinic Health System

Named as the Mayo Clinic Health System President in 2021, Dr. Varkey previously practiced medicine and served in several leadership roles at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic for more than a decade before leaving in 2013 to pursue CEO roles at Seton Clinical Enterprise in Austin, Texas, and Northeast Medical Group within Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health.

Founders Day Convocation

To cap off an exciting and historic year, the final event of Salem’s 250th anniversary year will be Founders Day—a special, once-in-a-lifetime day that will bring together the entire Salem community, including alumnae of all classes, and prominent leaders from the local, state, and national level. Following traditional events for students and an Awards Convocation, the day will culminate with the 250th Anniversary Celebration, featuring a keynote address by a highly respected national speaker and a panel discussion among women leaders representing diverse range of fields.

The theme of the 250th Anniversary Celebration will focus on how a community of women working together can serve as a catalyst to initiate trailblazing positive change with global impact. The day will conclude with a festive birthday celebration, community picnic and dance. Please mark your calendars for what promises to be a day of fun, reflection, and camaraderie at Salem Academy and College.

In honor of Salem’s 250th Anniversary, we are inviting all alumnae back to campus for a special 250th Anniversary All-Class Reunion Weekend. We also are adding some new and exciting additions to the Reunion Schedule. We will have special events to celebrate our 2022 milestone Reunion classes as well as those classes who missed their Reunions in 2020 and 2021. It is going to be a great weekend, including the 250th Founders Day and Inauguration of President Summer J. McGee on Friday, April 22 at 4:15 p.m.
